2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
1. The Scope of God’s Comfort: vs. 3 “the God of all comfort”
We have a God who is able to comfort us in ALL of our trying situations. He is the God of ALL comfort; are you hurting deeply over a death of a loved one? God has comfort for that hurt. Do you worry over the day to day trials that you can’t seem to organize and control? God has that every day comfort you seek. Have you been hurt deeply by a loved one or close friend? Your savior knows that pain and has that comfort you need. There is no pain felt, no trial endured or no burden that you will every bear that your God cannot empathize and comfort you through every step of the way. “All comfort” means just that, ALL types of comfort; ALL degrees of comfort; in ALL situations that demand comfort, your God will be there. Cast your care upon him, for he careth for you.
2. The Specialness of God’s Comfort: vs. 4 we are “comforted of God”
Notice the passage specifies that it is the “God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” that provides our comfort. God could easily cause our comfort to come from another source other than himself. He could cause angels, special messengers or Bible story hero’s to come bring us comfort; however, he chooses to personally be the source of all our comfort. It is his very nature to comfort those that mourn. It is God who “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think…”(Eph. 3:20) The very Almighty God of heaven that holds the stars and planets in his hand, is the same God that deals personally with each of his children. Are you a child of God? Then rejoice in the fact that he doesn’t deal with you second hand or through an appointment book, but individually and personally every time you call. God himself promises that he will be your comfort.
3. The Sharing of God’s Comfort: vs.4 “that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble”
We are to pass along God’s comfort to those who we find in need. It is always God’s intention for his children to take what they learn from him and pass it along to help others. Listen to these verses of scripture that emphasize this truth:
2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
Matthew 10:8 Jesus said “…freely ye have received, freely give.”
Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
I could go on and on with scriptures but it is plain to see what God intends for us to do. No doubt there are times you can recall to your mind where in your pain some dear brother or sister in Christ said a kind word, wrote an encouraging card or called you at the right time. Rejoice in these blessings of God and make sure you pass them along to those you meet. Our great God has enough comfort for everyone!
