2 Thessalonians 1:6-9 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; 7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
This passage of scripture is very clear that there is a future punishment for those who “know not God and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” This is a harsh future that will involve an “everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.” It is described with words like: flaming fire, vengeance, punished and everlasting destruction. The saddest part of this description is the reality that these people who have rejected Christ will face an eternity without Him. An eternity from the presence of the Lord means to be totally separated from life, goodness and peace. They will never experience the glory of his saving power. They are doomed to spend eternity with Satan and his unholy minions. This demonic hoard knows nothing about kindness, mercy or compassion. They will torture their slaves for all eternity in the Lake of Fire. What a horrible thought to be penned up for eternity with such cruel creatures.
To the unsaved person, you who have never trusted Christ to forgive you of your sins, please hear me. There is good news, you do not have to experience this horrible eternity. You may be a sinner but you don’t have to die that way! The Bible says that God loves you and that Christ died for your sins. The payment for your sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Bible says, that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved”. The good news is that Jesus died for all sins and will forgive anyone who comes to him. Salvation is not through good works, baptism, communion, church membership, confirmation or catechism…salvation can only come through Jesus Christ. None of those things I just mentioned left heaven, died on a cross and rose from the dead for your sins; only Jesus did those things for you. Through trusting in Jesus Christ as your personal savior, you will be forgiven and cleansed from all unrighteousness. You will become a child of God and be given a place in heaven for eternity with Him. Acknowledging these truths alone will not save you, you must personally pray and ask Christ to forgive you and become your Lord and Savior.
To the saved, you who have experienced the new birth in Christ Jesus, please hear me. These sinners who will experience this sad future, many of them are our family, friends and neighbors. People we see every day; we rub shoulders with them at work, we see at the bank & stores, we smile to them and say “Have a good day” but we never tell them about Jesus. We never make time to talk seriously to them. We always talk about nonessential formalities like the weather, our vacations or hunting trips but never about salvation. We often don’t even give them a gospel tract or invite them to church. We must make it a priority to talk to them. Think and pray hard about setting up an opportunity to talk to them. Maybe invite them over for dinner, ask them to go to lunch or talk to them at break time. However the Spirit of God leads you, be willing to talk to them. Jesus Christ is counting on us to spread his word. This is not only the job of pastors and preachers; it is the responsibility of every child of God to be a soul-winner. Every Christian is called to spread the good news of the gospel. When is the last time you led a soul to Christ? Who was last person you invited to church or handed a gospel tract? When was the last time you earnestly tried to tell someone about Christ’s salvation? We must work hard for our Lord, he is counting on us and so are the millions of sinners who will die without Christ if we don’t tell them.
